RANDOM THOUGHTS: I LOVE COMEDY

One thing that I really enjoy is comedy. To be more specific, I dig sketch comedy and IMPROV. Shows like Saturday Night Live, (which is my favorite show) Short Circuitz (which is really getting at Chappelle’s Show in my book) and Mad TV are just a few of the types of sketch comedy shows I like. Oh I’m not shallow at all with my shows. I love the Flip Wilson Show, In Living Color, The Cedric the Entertainer show (which the network set up for failure, but thats a whole ‘nother show) The Carol Burnette Show, even Hee Haw. I’m a Jerry Lewis fan and I love the “Rat Pack“. I’m a student of this stuff, and I really enjoy the writing, the delivery, and the improv that goes along with doing sketch, stage productions or even stand-up comedy.

You know what I realy like though, the show “Seinfeld“. It was genius to me. Those guys can deliver. Now that’s improv. Imagine getting a few instructions on how a scene should be and having to execute it…pretty much off dome. (For my International friends) …having to execute it off the top of your head. I had to clear it up for some. No, seriously. I remember going to Chatham, Ontario (that’s in Canada) a few years back to go to Wheels Inn *woman in the audience screaming “Woo Hooooo! Chattttthaaamm in the house” while clapping* Anyway, I went to this gas station to get some Double Mint gum (which the guy had no idea what Double Mint was) I walked in and the dude asked me how I was. I remember this as clear as…clear. I said, “ohhh I’m hanging in there”. *record scratches* He was like, “what did you just say?” I repeated it and he had no idea what I was talking about. Hell, it could’ve meant “empty the damn drawer” in Canadian. Our cliche’s and phrases we use for emphasis are different. Point is I was just clarifying the words “off dome”.

Anyway, Seinfeld has got to be one of the funniest shows around. It comes on 7 days a week, and I’m pretty on it whether watching it in real time or on the dvr. It’s the show about nothing they say, but it’s clever and witty. The situations that each and every one of the characters get into are just nuts. From Elaine and the soup nazi (ROTF) to George and his answering machine “answering machine“. By the way, the soup nazi is the funniest episode. You’re supposed to order the soup based on a system as Jerry and George does. Then Elaine walks in (at a later time) and is talking to the soup nazi, leaning on the counter…just casual, right? Well, basically he quickly rips her apart. If you’re not a Seinfeld fan, then that’s cool. I’m not gonna diss the show because of what Mike Richards did years after the show ended if thats the reason.

Movin right along, last week, just when I was having one of those “wish I was kid again” moments, I came across this video of kids portraying the characters of Seinfeld on the Tube. I like the terminology used in this sketch and the references to the real show. It was hillarious to me and I hope yall enjoy it as much as I do. I also included the soup nazi and the answering machine for you. Have a good one. I’ll be coming around to holla at you.
